LIFTING THE LID: UNCOVERING
HIDDEN INEQUITIES

Breast cancer diagnosis: State of the Nation 2024

Created to provide significant insights to system and clinical leaders in breast cancer, this State of the Nation report clearly outlines what is happening and provides actionable insights to ‘build in fairness’ for groups of women experiencing inequities.

Our aim is to uncover and shine a light on hidden inequities that exist in the initial stage of breast cancer diagnosis at the national, Cancer Alliance and system levels – in essence to ‘lift the lid’ on inequities that different groups of women experience in breast cancer diagnosis.

Using our expertise in analysing NHS HES data, we have examined whether inequities exist in the initial stage at which breast cancer is diagnosed in women in England, from April 2019 to March 2023.

We anticipate that this report will be published in early June 2024.

Methodology

This report analyses contemporary data, with a study period of four years from 2019/20 to 2022/23, with a total of 217,040 women. We divided the total number of breast cancer diagnoses into stage of initial diagnosis: early breast cancer (EBC), breast cancer with lymph node involvement (LNI) and breast cancer with de novo metastatic (DNM) disease.

We investigated the different stages of diagnosis to better understand the role various factors contributed to healthcare inequities. These factors included age, deprivation, ethnicity, greatest literacy need, urbanicity and route of referral that lead to the diagnosis.
